Participant Story· PetSmart

Asked for tips. Got their hours back. Now studying to be a Vet Tech.

Six months into their job at PetSmart, Faith's hours started getting cut. They asked their manager why, and what they could do about it. Their hours came back, and they're about to start vet-tech classes.

Faith Barnes was referred to Bridges by their dad, John Barnes, a retired Chicago public school teacher who'd worked with Bridges in the past. Faith had gone to college after high school, didn't enjoy it, and wanted to head straight into the workforce.

Faith is friendly and loves animals. They wanted to work somewhere they could be around animals all day. PetSmart offered them an interview. Then a second interview. Then a third. Then the job.

Faith had hoped to work in the pet hotel, but the only opening at hire was on the floor. They took it and did a little bit of everything.

About six months in, Faith's hours started getting cut. They didn't know why. So they asked their manager directly. He told them they weren't selling enough memberships at the cash register. Faith asked for tips. The manager gave them. Slowly, with the manager seeing how hard Faith was working at it, the hours came back.

Faith has now passed the one-year mark at PetSmart. The next step is starting vet-tech classes.
